The way they got worked up certainly told V that he'd committed a faux pas of some sort but embarrassment required investment in his social stature that he just didn't have. He had learned quickly that he already stuck out like a sore thumb here so othering himself further didn't particularly bother him. It'd likely save him a lot of grief in the end anyway.
